REVIEW

This is by far one of my favorite historical romance series, I love all the past Barringtons books and following the siblings to finding their love match. This one follows the brother of Lord Wells (now Duke of Averell) Leo who is considered the bastard son of at the time Duke of Averell, as this books takes place during parts of the other books storylines.

The Wager of a Lady introduces Georgina, an American heiress who is sent to London and forced to wed the very elderly Lord Masterson. She lives day in hated by her new husbands son as well as treated like an afterthought to her husband who gambles away his money. She meets Leo who owns the gentleman's gambling hell Elysium, both share a connection and banter. But in a turn of events they are both put in a situation that changes their lives forever.

As always in this series I love the storytelling, Ayers is fantastic in her world building but also her character development. They are always flawed, the men always have something that prevents them from moving towards happiness, not only because their stubborn but because of their past. Where the woman are headstrong and have their hearts wide open. I also love the way Ayer intertwines her past characters and we see a different side to their stories.

Leo is probably the most complicated out of the men in this series, being the bastard of a Duke, a Duke who loved him dearly but cause society to look at him in a different manner. Luckily his brother and Leo had a strong bond and they both supported each other after the tension between their father grew. His history with his father is the reason why Leo refuses to open up, his bastard title has scorned him and causes a lot of the friction between himself and Georgina. I loved the challenge of Georgina for Leo, she is headstrong and clever, she is thrown to the wolves of London by her family and she careful maneuvers her way in the world.

Overall the romance is off the charts as always, the characters, storyline and of course the fantastic suspense kept me hooked until the end. I highly recommend this series, especially for those that love the Bridgerton series.

“Do you mind?” Leo pulled a cheroot out of his pocket without waiting for a response. He flicked his wrist, lighting the end. The fragrant smoke spiraled up into the air above their heads, disappearing into the night. They sat in companionable silence for some time, with only the sound of the fountain. “May I?” she said, holding out her hand for the cheroot. He gave her an odd look but handed it over, the brush of his fingers against hers sending a tingle down her arm. Georgina hadn’t indulged in a cheroot since coming to London and before, she’d only done so to shock whatever gentleman had produced it from his pocket. Ben, ever complicit in her bad behavior, had taught her one day when she was fifteen. Maybe sixteen. It became a small bit of rebellion to steal cheroots from her father’s study. She took a short puff, blowing out a series of perfect smoke rings. A sound came from Leo, sifting beneath her skirts like a wisp of the cheroot smoke, winding its way up her silken clad legs, identical to the sound he’d made when his head had been between her thighs. “Quite a trick.” Taking the cheroot from her, he drew in the smoke then leaned over and caught his mouth against hers, blowing the smoke gently between her lips before breaking away. Georgina immediately formed her mouth into an ‘O’ and blew another perfect ring of smoke into the night air. She turned with a wiggle of her brows to find his gaze fixed on her. “I have many talents.” Tossing the cheroot, he ground it beneath his heel and reached for her before Georgina had a chance to move away. Fingers wrapping around the back of her neck, Leo pulled her close, mouth slanting against hers with exquisite tenderness. “I still remember,” he whispered against her lips, “the first time I saw you. Powder blue silk, your dangerously low neckline edged in Belgian lace. I kept waiting for a nipple to pop out.” “I wasn’t sure you even noticed I had a bosom.” “I noticed everything about you. The way the silk of your gown rustled when you moved. The sound of your accent flattening every lovely word you spoke. Your scent, like something wild growing in the forest.” “I told you.” Heat wafted off his body. “It is only soap.” “I couldn’t take my eyes from you. I still can’t.” Leo leaned back, eyes shining with something that looked very much like anguish before he jerked his head away.

Lady Theodosia Barrington is practically begging to be ruined.

That’s the assumption of the Marquess of Haven after spying Theodosia at a house party given by the Duke of Granby. After his father left him little else but a title and a crumbling estate, Haven is in desperate need of an heiress. Not only is Theodosia rich as Croesus and beautiful, but she’s also a Barrington. Her brother is Leo Murphy, owner of Elysium and the man Haven holds responsible for ruining his father.

Theodosia is the solution to all of Haven’s problems.

Lady Theodosia has long been infatuated with the Earl of Blythe. In an effort to prove her affection and perhaps induce him to offer for her, Theodosia paints a scandalous self-portrait of herself for Blythe as a birthday gift. The small token of affection is incredibly improper. Her behavior reckless.

She regrets gifting the miniature to Blythe immediately. Desperate to save her reputation before it can be destroyed and escape humiliation, Theodosia makes another rash decision. Retrieve the miniature from Blythe’s study.

Except the miniature is gone. And the only thing waiting for her is the Marquess of Haven.

And her own ruination.

I would have kissed you much sounder except I didn’t want Pith to take my head off. BLURB:

Bachelors, beware. For those who keep secrets and prey on the innocent, you will be exposed, with all your dirty little secrets laid bare to one and all. You have been warned...

Lady Olivia Haliford has had enough. Tired of seeing women lose their reputations, futures, and sometimes even their lives to scandal while the men walk free, she is ready to take back power and stand up for women everywhere. Along with her two closest friends, she plans to start an anonymous publication dedicated to dishing the dirt and exposing the secrets of society's most eligible bachelors. But in order to do so, she will have to make a deal with the devil...

Sebastian Colver, known as the Bastard of Baker Street, is feared throughout London as the city's most notorious gambling den owner and undisputed king of the underground. His life is nothing but darkness and danger, so he is shocked when the petite lady gracing his doorstep seems anything but frightened of him. He agrees to be a silent partner in the publishing of the Gazette if she will use her connections to sponsor his sister and launch her into Society and away from his dark world.

But exposing the secrets of the rich and powerful can be dangerous. Almost as dangerous as a lady falling in love with the king of the underground.

REVIEW:

Where oh where has this author been and why was she not on my top historical read list? This is my first read for author Maddison Michaels and not my last, I'm ashamed to say I had not read a book by her, but I will be reading more now! This was a wonderful start to a new series, lots of suspense, steamy moments, complex characters and tons of humor.

The Bachelor Bargain follow Lady Olivia and her two friends, they just lost one of the closest friends and they want to punish whoever did this to her. They believe she was murdered, and that one of the many Bachelors in society that go around and break many hearts is responsible. They come up with a plan to out all these men, but they need help and Lady Olivia goes to one of the most dangerous men in society the Bastard of Baker Street Sebastian Colver. He too hates the society of rich and superior, but is taken back by this bold woman and together they face the dangers of finding the murder and staying alive.

Lady Olivia is my sole sister, she was a tough as nails lady, injured at a young age and having to use a cane, never slows her down. She is determined and always puts others first. Her courage was admirable, even though she constantly put herself in danger to get answers. She had no fear even going face to face with Sebastian who has a lot of blood on his hands. Together they became the perfect pair to take down the big bads. Sebastian is ruthless, he grew up defending himself on the streets and became successful and feared for it. But this big powerful man doesn't know what to do with this small spitfire of a woman.

Overall I loved this story and this introduction to a series, I was laughing, swooning and holding my breath with each and every chapter. Michael's is a master at her craft, her writing is beautiful done and her characters are captivating and memorable. I can't wait to see who the next installment follows because both Lady Olivia's friends are given some great highlights that I know the readers are going to be in for a thrill.

BLURB:

Joshua Sinclair was once the fiercest and most notorious warrior of the mighty Sinclair clan of Northern Scotland. But now there’s nothing and no one that can make him take up arms again. Except a beautiful woman, it seems.

When Kára Flett, daughter of a fallen Norse chief, finds herself unexpectedly sheltering the strongest, most brutal warrior in the land, she throws together a risky and outrageous plan to bring him to her side. Threats of violence bounce right off him. Offers of gold seem to entice him even less. Desperate enough to use the pleas of the village children to sway him, she’s shocked when he’s completely unmoved. There’s only one tactic left for her: seduction.

Her hasty proposition falls completely by the wayside, though, as she and the Highlander come together in a carnal inferno. But bringing him into her life also brings his enemies to her clan’s doorstep—the very clan Kára is trying to protect. And as their feelings deepen, Joshua will have to decide between duty and love once and for all.

REVIEW:

I came into this story knowing I was coming into it as the second in the series. Its safe to say this can most definitely be read as a stand alone. I would recommend reading the first however due to the fact on why Joshua the lead left his clan to train other clans.

This was a wonderful bundle of historical goodness, the author crafted a world about real history surrounding Robert Stuart and his army. Highland Warrior follows Joshua Sinclair who left his clan after his older brother took over from their father. Joshua was trained as a warrior, war was in his blood, as his father made it be so. When his brother takes over he wants peace, but Joshua is the Horseman of War and he can see the peace that his brother wants. He leaves and trains other men, while eventually training Robert Stuarts men, but training them puts a target on his head at all times. When he sees what his brother wants is now something he wants after the death of a child, he leaves for home.

But he comes face to face with a woman he can't resist, Kara Flett, the daughter of a Norse King. She needs his help and protection and will do anything to get it.

I love reading stories of men who go on to find themselves, Joshua may have acted on immature intentions because of how he was raised, but he became the man he was suppose to be especially after meeting Kara and her people. I applaud the author for really showing growth in a male character, especially an alpha male, I really enjoy reading this. When Kara and Joshua meet its an intense attraction, the knows who he is and does something any desperate woman would do to save those she loves. The romance is passionate, intense and the connection between these two characters grows with every moment together, more so with Kara's son, her son was actually the one who won me over.

In the end this is a great historical romance, lots of suspense and having the reader wonder how will they have their happy ending with all the dangers that keep coming their way. I did have a hard time connecting to Kara , her stubborn nature and how she just didn't listen didn't sit right with me. Overall her character should of been my most liked but I couldn't connect. But that did not take away from the wonderful writing and world building.

Granby doesn’t care for bastard relatives or tainted pedigrees and Andromeda possesses both. Nor does he like opinionated young ladies who enjoy hurling insults in his direction.

Andromeda is, in short, the most annoying creature he’s ever met.

When she arrives, uninvited, to a house party given at his estate, Granby can’t decide whether to kiss Andromeda senseless or send her packing.

Andromeda is the victim of infatuation and bad luck.

The infatuation is that of her sister for the Earl of Blythe, but the misfortune belongs solely to Andromeda after she is forced to attend a house party hosted by the Duke of Granby. She and the duke are previously, unpleasantly, acquainted. The entire party is bound to be awkward, and their mutual dislike difficult to hide. Her only recourse is to avoid the giant block of ice masquerading as a duke. Thankfully, Granby’s estate is enormous.

But instead of mutual hostility upon arriving, Romy is greeted with unexpected attraction. Insults turn into flirtation. Heated discussions become lingering kisses.

Her heart is ruined. Granby may not even have one.

And the duke has already chosen another young lady to be his duchess.

The Design of Dukes is a steamy historical romance with a guaranteed happily ever after and next in the series The Beautiful Barringtons.

REVIEW:

The second book in the Beautiful Barringtons series, continues the fantastic adventures in finding love for this chaotic and entertaining family. I would be friends with all the Barringtons, they just seem to be so much fun and hilarious. Ayers crafts around her colorful characters with ease and once again keeps me hooked.

The Designs of Dukes follows Lardy Andromeda Barrington, who has an artistic heart and eye for fashion. She secretly helps the most popular designer in her shop, make the most stunning dresses for society, unknown to her family of course. After time mourning her father she and her sister Theo are back out in society, her sister wanting to catch the eye of the Earl of Blythe, while she herself is trying to avoid the Duke of Granby. He is a cold and loathsome man whom she despises, he sets of something in her that she cant explain. Little does she know that she does the same to him.

Romy aka Andromeda was such a fun character to follow, she is the daughter of the late duke and now sister to the current duke. However in society her families colorful background might not be ideal in the eyes of the Duke of Granby. You see the Duke hates scandals' and that's what the Barringtons are all about. Granby frustrated me to no ends in this story, I felt so bad for Romy, who constantly got the hot and cold vibes from him. But did she give him some sass back. These two have insane chemistry and I couldn't get enough. The romance is sexy and passionate and gave me full on butterflies.

In the end this was a great addition to a fantastic historical romance series. If you enjoy Julia Quinn and Lisa Kleypas, then add Kathleen Ayers asap!

“Very well. I already know what you will ask for.”

“You do?” That surprised him. He was so close to her that if Andromeda took a deep breath, the tips of her breasts would brush his chest.

A pained look came over her lovely features. “And I completely understand, Your Grace.”

“You do?” he murmured.

“You wish me and Theo to leave the house party. It is unfortunate you and I have formed such a dislike for each other.”

“Is that what you are calling it?”

“I’ll make an excuse that I’m ill or I’m concerned for my mother so that we may return to London with all haste.” She turned away from him and bent at the waist, giving him another lovely view of her backside, glaringly apparent through the folds of petticoats she was encased in. Her hands flew over the papers spread out across the grass to

gather them up.

Andromeda assumed, incorrectly, he wanted her to leave The Barrow. The very thought gave him a hollow sensation in the middle of his stomach.

“No. I would never suggest such a thing.” His voice sounded chilly even to his own ears.

“You don’t need to, Your Grace. I take your meaning.”

Andromeda hadn’t the slightest idea how badly David wanted her. He looked over her shoulder as her hands began to stack the papers neatly together. Not drawings of the stream and woods as he’d thought. What most young ladies with a mediocre talent for sketching would draw. But gowns. Dresses. One with a motif of butterflies across the skirt. There was even a sketch of a riding habit.

I have an acquaintance who owns a dress shop.

Andromeda, already fascinating, became more so.

“I don’t wish you to leave the house party,” he said to the trim line of her back.

“My presence clearly annoys you, Your Grace.”

Indeed, it did, in so many ways David had stopped counting. “A correct assessment.”

“Then Theo and I will leave in the morning.”

“No,” his said roughly. “You will not.”

Andromeda’s hands stilled on her drawings, stiffening with anger at his commanding tone.

David stared at the line of buttons running down her spine. Could he bite them off with his teeth? The dress would fall away from her shoulders, exposing all her glorious skin.

She turned back to face him, angrily tying a piece of leather around the portfolio to keep it closed. “What else could you possibly want, Your Grace? An apology for the insult about your coat? How petty, it was well over a year ago.”

His head fell forward, nose gliding up the slope of her neck, inhaling the soft lavender scent lingering on her skin.

A soft gasp of surprise left her, but she didn’t move away. The portfolio fell from her hands.

“I want this,” he whispered. David nuzzled the bit of skin just beneath her ear before catching her lips with his.

“Were you sketching Granby’s backside?” Blythe laughed out from between his gloved fingers, clearly finding the situation amusing. “I suppose there’s a first time for everything.”

Heat stung her cheeks at Blythe’s scandalous statement. “I was absolutely not, my lord.”

“Could you find nothing else more worthy of your talent?” Blythe’s tone turned flirtatious. “Mine, perhaps?” Blythe turned sideways and wiggled his hips.

Blythe was a shameless rogue. Though Romy had to admit upon inspection, Blythe’s backside, like the rest of him, was rather magnificent.

Granby’s eyes fluttered shut, head shaking as if Blythe continuously tried his limited patience, before once again fixing Romy with a frosty glare.

“I was sketching Miss Cummings’s costume,” Romy waved in the direction of the young lady who was now wandering off, oblivious to the fact her gown had been the cause of Romy’s current situation.

“And eavesdropping.” Granby’s snarl met her ears.

“Who knows what else you were sketching,” Blythe said mischievously. “I’d like to take a look.”

She immediately hid her notebook within the folds of her skirts. “I’m not certain,” Romy snapped back, embarrassed to having been caught looking at Granby and having Blythe take notice, “there was anything of merit for me to overhear. If you must know—”

“Oh, I must.” Granby drawled.

“If you must know,” she imitated in a mockery of Granby, “I was struck dumb at the sight of the duke’s coat.”

“My coat?” The dark eyes narrowed blasting her with dislike.

“Yes, Your Grace.” She nodded as if truly at odds with what she was about to relay to him. “I noticed the length is incorrect. Two inches longer would be much more in line with what is deemed fashionable.”

Granby’s massive shoulders stiffened. One gloved hand tugged at his collar though she hadn’t said a word about his cravat. Yet.

“She may have a point, Gran,” Blythe added helpfully looking between his coat and Granby’s. “I think I mentioned—”

“I do not,” Granby interrupted Blythe, all his attention firmly on Romy, “take fashion advice from a woman who has the poor sense to come to a party dressed as a shrub.”

Romy sucked in her breath. Her costume was lovely. She was a dryad. A tree nymph. It was true that very few saw the vision of her costume today, guessing somewhat correctly she was a tree of some sort but she certainly, emphatically, did not look like a shrub. Granby himself was a mountain masquerading as a duke.

“I am a tree nymph, Your Grace.” Romy stated with determination.

“I beg to differ.” The dark eyes ran down her body. “You look like a shrub. All you need is a bit of red and I’d mistake you for a holly.”

BLURB:

Katz Almira’s mission is clear—travel to the past, steal the note that ruins the world, travel back to the present. Easy. She’s the best pickpocket Time Weavers, Inc. has ever had. Posing as a poor widow in Regency London, she convinces her target, Lord John Byron, a man as sexy as he is wealthy, to take her in off the streets. But at her request to keep her hidden, instead of his cushy manor, he allows her to stay in a warehouse full of orphan boys he cares for there.

It’s the perfect place to hide, and bonus, her new roommates can help her find the mysterious note. With John as their pseudo-father, they know what he does every day, and with who. Katz can’t afford any distractions, but she soon finds herself getting attached to the orphans—and John—even helping him plan for their futures.

Each day she spends in the past is another day closer to her deadline, another day closer to returning to her own time, and another day John and this makeshift family get dangerously closer to her heart. But Katz staying in the past would have dire consequences for them all.

REVIEW:

I was super excited to read this series, I'm a huge fan of Timeless the tv show and after reading the synopsis for the Time Weavers series, it was calling my name.

A Pocket of Time follows Katz and team member of the Time Weavers Inc. who is given the task of going back in time to when Napoleon existed to reverse something that disrupted the current history. USA is no longer and they need to correct a note that carried special information and make sure it got into the right hands. Katz goes undercover as a middle class widow who joins a young group of pick pocketers and the man who protects them, the wealthy Lord John Byron. But when the heart start causing problems as Katz gets close to him, she starts to question if changing history is worth letting her heartbreak.

Katz is a fantastic lead, she grew up on the streets and going back in history and once again putting herself on the streets with young boys who are like her, she is able to adapt quickly. She becomes protective over the boys who are unknowingly helping her change history back to the correct ways. Her connection to Lord John Byron was entertaining at first because their interactions were hilarious, he had no idea how much of a handful Katz was going to be. Their chemistry was their right from the start and every interaction there after was more and more steamy, until the pages caught fire.

Overall this was such a great new series for me as well as new author, I did not read the first book, however I never felt lost. I look forward to going back and reading what happened to the first couple because their story sounds like a great one. In the end I highly recommend this series not only for historical romances lovers but for anyone who enjoys history, as the history aspects were fantastically well thought out.
