BLURB:

Rachel Fortier is a much sought-after expert when it comes to exotic planets—especially the deadly kind. So when she’s hired by Earth Fleet’s most respected scientist to join a mission to the tightly closed planet Harp, it’s a dream come true. Until she discovers their mission is to capture shifters and sell them to the Military.

Shifter Aidan Devlin is on patrol far from his clan when he sees a shuttlecraft landing where it definitely shouldn’t be. As the invaders emerge, he’s surprised to see a lone lovely woman, who doesn’t seem to belong. But when he’s captured and put in a cage, he has no one but her to help him escape.

Drawn together by a hunger they can’t resist, and desperate to discover who betrayed Harp, Aidan and Rachel first have to survive a deadly journey to the city. But once there, they find themselves confronted by a conspiracy that goes even deeper. Because Harp is harboring a traitor. And he’s willing to destroy their world—and everything in it—to get what he wants.

REVIEW:

The second installment to the Shifter Planet series dives even deeper into The Green. Reynolds has created such a unique and mesmerizing world full of unusual creatures and a forest that is very much alive itself. Along with the shifters, I loved how this story highlighted the other animals and how they survive on this planet.

Shifter Planet: The Return follows Rachel, a scientist who comes to Harp a planet earth is very interested in. However she discovers she has been brought there under false pretenses as the people she is with are trying to capture rare creatures, one being the wild cats on the planet. She does what she can to help the Cat that is captured and soon gets the help of Aiden. Little does she know that Aiden is the very Cat whom she helped. Together the work to survive and get through The Green. While Rachel learn about Harp, she gets closer to Aiden, the two can resist the chemistry. But there is a traitor on Harp and together they work with Aidens pack to stop the danger before its too late.

I love this series. All the characters from the first installment are back, I loved reading about Amanda and Rhodry story and there journey with her pregnancy. Their story and Rachel and Aidens all tie together, I loved seeing them all interact and can tell the four of them are going to be power couples to keep Harp, The Green and Amanda's kiddo safe.

Rachel was a great character, she is a scientist so everything about Harp fascinated her. Aiden in a way was her teacher and his guide and her knowledge helped them through The Green. I liked that even though curiosity got to her, she understood the important of secrecy and why Harp and the people don't want outsiders to know their secrets. Aiden was a favorite of mine from the first book, so I was excited to see his development and how much of a warrior and protector he is of not only his world but how much he loves and is devoted to his family and pack.

Overall this was a great second book and just like the first it is sexy and every moment between Rachel and Aiden set the pages on fire. I love how shifters are not bashful, Aiden really brought out the fierce and sexy side of the shifters. I totally cant wait for the next book and I'm really hoping it's Finns book.

{Review} of Guarded By The Alpha: (BBW Paranormal Shapeshifter

Guarded By The Alpha: (BBW Paranormal Shapeshifter Romance) by Heather Hildenbrand

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
GENRE: Paranormal
THEME: Romance, Shifters
RECEIVED: Author

BLURB:

Puma shifter, Del Santoni, has lived her entire life as the heir to a decades’ old feud with the Armsford family—a struggle that ended in the death of her own father years ago. Since then, both sides have done nothing but fight and grapple for social power—and Del’s sick of it. She’s willing to do anything to end the war—even if it means dethroning her own family.

Del begins a secret mission to recover the Maker’s Mark. If legend is true, its symbols will reveal the name of the one true ruling family. When the statue is found and someone threatens Del’s life in order to steal it, Del is forced to accept the help and protection of her greatest enemy. He is the most stubborn, infuriating werewolf she’s ever laid eyes on. He also happens to be her fated mate. Throw in a sassy human car thief who won’t leave her alone, a marriage hoax, and tattooed coyote shifters trying to kill her at every rest stop...if she survives the week, it’ll be a miracle.

Wolf shifter Zak Armsford has never been accused of being a good guy – but being good doesn’t get the job done. Mislabeled and misunderstood, he left Fort Jericho years ago and joined the military to put his bad rep to good use. Now that he’s a free man, he’s not exactly white collar material. So when his friend from Shifters, Inc calls with a protection detail, Zak is just hungry enough for some action to say yes.

Turns out his assignment offers plenty of action. Zak discovers he’s been hired to protect the Princess of Fort Jericho herself. Del Santoni—his greatest enemy and his childhood crush all in one. Zak can’t walk away a second time. To keep Del alive and the statue safe, he’ll ruthlessly use his supernatural strength, his connections, and Del’s own secrets against her.

On the run, Del struggles with the truth. Is Zak her Fated Mate – or her mortal enemy? Because it’s not just Del’s heart that’s at risk – it’s her life.

REVIEW:

I’m a big fan of Heather Hildenbrand Dirty Blood series; she has a knack for writing suspenseful plots and fantastic romances. I was super excited to read her adult series under the name Holly Eastman, but even more so because it was focused on shifters and a Romeo and Juliet type plot.

Guarded by the Alpha follows wolf shifter Zak Armsford who after being in the military for years now takes on jobs for his friend and company Shifters Inc. He’s assigned with a job he isnt too pleased about, guarding the daughter aka princess of a rival pack. Del Santoni and Zak are forced to stick together to keep her alive until she makes it home. But someone is after her and an artifact she found and it seems they know every step she takes. Hopefully the two can get along until his assignments done, but an unexpected connection changes everything they grew up knowing.

Zak has always been labeled the bad boy, when he finds out he’s protecting his sworn enemy, he is all about giving up the job. Until of course he figures out the real danger and cant seem to resist the connection he and Del have. I adored Zak, he goes against everything hes grown up knowing, helping Del even though her pack has done everything to make him the bad guy. He is a totally alpha male, he fights, talks and kisses rough and demanding. I loved every bit of him and his sarcasm with Del.

Del is the heir to the Puma pack and when she discovers an artifact that could change the fate of her pack and Zaks, she is determined to reveal the truth. But someone wants what she has including her along with it. She is a spunky determined woman, who is trying to do the right thing, but hasn’t really thought out the consequences that might come along with it. But she always known one thing for sure, Zak her enemy is her Fated Mate and she cant resist him, well she doesn’t want to resist him. Even when their fighting they cant deny their connection. The steamy and smoking hot moments together increase the bond she feels with him, making it all that much harder to “hate” him.

Overall I loved every moment with this crazy pair, the love hate relationship is extreme and passionate. There is a ton of humor, suspense, and non stop action. The two are consistently on the run from an unknown enemy and when you find out who it is, it’s a total shocker. Though the story focuses on shifters, there is one human among them that was a nice touch but she felt a little random. However I liked her friendship with Del and that she doesn’t seem shaken easily. In the end I’m hoping there is more to come from Shifters Inc. and that we get more from Del and Zak to see how they are doing.

{Review} The Leopard King by Ann Aguirre

The Leopard King by Ann Aguirre
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

GENRE: Paranormal
THEME: Romance, Shifters
RECEIVED: Bought
The Leopard King (Ars Numina, #1)

BLURB:

Proud. Imperious. Impassioned.

Until three years ago, those words applied to Dominic Asher, the leader of Ash Valley. His family has ruled the feline branch of the Animari for hundreds of years, guiding the pride through perilous times. Unspeakable loss drove him into seclusion, a feral beast nobody can tame. Now he’s wrecked, a leopard king in exile, and he wants nothing more than to die.

Fierce. Loyal. Determined.

Fortunately for Dom, those words still apply to Pru Bristow, his dead mate’s best friend. She’s had her heart broken too, but she never quits. With the conclave approaching, alliances with the Pine Ridge pack and Burnt Amber clans on the verge of collapse, she’s prepared to do whatever it takes to drag their leader back, before his second can start a war.

At best theirs seems like a desperate alliance, but when their mate bond turns hot and fierce, there’s no end to the questions and the doubts. Neither of them expects to fall in love. But sometimes people don’t know what they’re looking for until they find it.

REVIEW:

I’m a big fan of Ann Aguirre, and couldn’t of been more excited to hear about her new series Ars Numina that focuses on a world full of shifters. Aguirre has always impressed me with her character developments and the power couple she creates within such a dynamic world. I loved this new series and the first she has done as an independent author.

The Leopard King follows Dominic Asher, who has been hiding out in anguish after the loss of his mate. It has been years now, but he’s depression and drinking has caused him steer away from his duties as the Leopard King. But when politics cause worry for his pack, his best friend a second in command sends Pru, Doms friend and his dead mates best friend to convince him to come home. Which causes Pru to get in a sticky situation where she ends up Doms mate and pulled into political chaos.

Dom was a mess when the readers first meet him, he has pretty much hit rock bottom and wants nothing to do with anyone. But Pru wont let her friend and someone who has always been there for her lose himself to his animal. Pru challenges Dom, he is use to her being more quite and submissive but she wakes him up and to his surprise bring out a side in him he though he lost when his mate died. Dom goes back to his pack only to deal with the other packs issues and threats, he becomes concerned for his pack and his new mate when a death occurs during negotiations. I loved Doms brooding demeanor at the beginning, he was sad and lonely but his bickering with Pru brought out a different side to him. He does change into a more protective and sweet guy later on but overall he just want hurting and he needed a little spunk and sweet from Pru to wake him up.

Pru has been a slight outside in her pack since she is the inly one who cant shift. She has also been connected to Doms second command and best friend Slay. But Slay has never claimed her as his mate. Things of course get complicated when Pru brings Dom back to the pack. It was interesting seeing how much she grew over the course of the book, she had to learn her new role quickly and deal with Dom and Slay in the midst of it all.

Overall I enjoyed the introduction to this world, there are many different shifters brought into the fold. I liked tension, humor and romance that the author put into the mix and cant wait to see what happens next with Slay. I’m happy to say its not a cliffhanger as we get a good conclusion to the main pair, but it does have a bit of a shock into the next book.

Synopsis:
Cassius, Alpha of Sutter Butte, leads the most ruthless and dangerous pack in the United States. A pack comprised of misfits who didn’t fit in their previous packs, cast offs discarded by their packs and forgotten wolves who rose to create a pack more than a century before in utter defiance of the order of the day. Sometimes pitiless and cruel, he wants more for his people than a yearly bloodbath as they fight for a new place, a better spot in the pecking order. To change his pack, means to change himself and he will find rebellion on all sides, not the least of which is his own defiant heart.
Sovvan Stark, Omega of Delta Crescent, lives a cherished, beloved life in the center of her pack, a delicate and hard won balance. Though she is not the only Omega, she is the most experienced with the tremors of pack upset when power shifts from Alpha to Alpha. When her Alpha approaches her about Sutter Butte’s request, Sovvan considers the matter for several long months. While she might hold within her the key to helping the Sutter Butte Alpha, the undertaking could very well kill her.
Accompanied by a single Hound, Sovvan begins a journey to help Cassius rebuild the foundation of his pack, but first she will have to transform him…

Read an Excerpt from DESERT WOLF

Heat rolled in waves from the blacktop of the old highway. Around him, the desert sprawled in its painted glory, seemingly melting into the horizon where it kissed the sky. The colors streaked past him as he accelerated, blowing past the old trading posts and bypassing the interstate with its smoother surface and promise of civilization in the distance. If one sought to journey through the decades, the old highway east of Holbrook was the place to start.
Sweat slicked his back beneath the leather jacket and the motorcycle vibrated between his thighs. Clocking over a hundred, he barely noticed the machine’s growl echoing his wolf’s. Cassius Lucera del Alba, Alpha of Sutter Butte squinted to catch sight of the town he sought ahead.
Though town was a generous description for the collection of ramshackle structures—of which a filling station with a decrepit market attached and a lone bar were clearly detailed. Time hadn’t forgotten the town, it had left it in the dust by doing a hundred and sixty and never looked back. If the location had a name, no map detailed it, not even Google. The poor bastards didn’t even have a ghost to call their own.
Though they might when he finished.
He didn’t slow until he reached the main drag, all eighty-five feet of it and parked his bike in front of the bar. A handful of vehicles were scattered amongst the cracked pavement and gravel. Three he recognized, two he didn’t. Like the bar, the cars were in sad shape and far more popular in earlier decades. Killing the engine, he dropped the kickstand and slid off his baby. Road dust coated her paint and chrome. With a stroke of his gloved hand over the seat, he promised her a bath later.
Leaving the bike, he strode toward the building. No one moved outside, but one wolf stood inside the filling station. He was a smart wolf, he’d spotted Cassius, yet didn’t reach for a phone or make any move other than retrieving his newspaper and flipping it open.
Inside, the cool air rushed over his sweaty face like a sweet kiss. The scents of stale beer, body odor, remnants of the blood spilled throughout the years, and fear stained the experience. The population of the bar—easily a dozen wolves though Cassius scented at least four more in the back—glanced up from their places scattered around the room. Three played pool, four others huddled around a card game while the rest sat in various spots including two at the bar drinking. A couple in the corner paused with her hand down his pants. The bartender—a tall, broad wolf with a balding pate and a world-weary expression raised his eyebrows in silent inquiry.
“Beer. Cold.” Cassius said, and the bartender nodded. A moment later, he set a tall bottle of Corona on the weathered bar top. The sides frosted and a hint of vapor escaped the top. Condensation formed almost immediately on the sides, slicking along the glass in rivulets.
Stripping off his fingerless gloves first. Cassius set them on the bar. Next, he peeled off his jacket. The old leather moulded him perfectly after the many years he spent wearing it. Only after setting it on the bar next to his gloves did he peel off three one hundred dollar bills and lay them next to the bottle. The bartender didn’t say a word as he took the bills, tucked them into his pocket then locked his register and exited through the double doors behind the bar.
Leaning against the aged wood, Cassius swept the room with his gaze. “If any of you are still sitting on your asses, disobeying the direct orders I sent out when I finish this beer, I’ll kill you.” He didn’t raise his voice. Shouting accomplished nothing. Yelling indicated the battle was lost before it began.
Chair legs scraping across the floor splintered the silence. The couple in the corner disengaged. The she-wolf grabbed her purse as she stood. Boots striking the floor punctuated her exodus. No sooner did the door slam shut behind her than the four wolves playing cards toss them down, abandoning their game. The men muttered, but they divvied the pot, then bowed their heads to him one at a time before hurrying out.
Tipping the bottle up, he took a long pull of the cold drink. It soothed his parched throat. One of the pool players threw down his stick. One of the wolves tried to stop him with a hand on his arm, but he shook it off. Then like the other wolves before him, he hurried out the door.
From nearly twenty to only ten—behind feet stomped on the stairs followed by another door slamming. Make that eight. One of the upstairs wolves strode into the bar, and stood in the center of it. Surprise filled his scent at the emptiness in the room. The others waited, their attention divided between Cassius and Finch.
Stupid fucking name for a wolf. Another long pull from his beer, and Cassius was three quarters finished. One by one he met the gazes of the wolves around the room. The smarter ones lowered their eyes immediately, the dumbasses fought to hold his gaze—even Finch.
Focusing on him last, Cassius studied him. Fresh beads of sweat began to trickle along Finch’s cheeks. The wolf swore, then stomped out and slammed the door with enough force, one of the hinges cracked.
Then there were seven.

About Heather Long:

National bestselling author, Heather Long, likes long walks in the park, science fiction, superheroes, Marines, and men who aren’t douche bags. Her books are filled with heroes and heroines tangled in romance as hot as Texas summertime. From paranormal historical westerns to contemporary military romance, Heather might switch genres, but one thing is true in all of her stories—her characters drive the books. When she’s not wrangling her menagerie of animals, she devotes her time to family and friends she considers family. She believes if you like your heroes so real you could lick the grit off their chest, and your heroines so likable, you’re sure you’ve been friends with women just like them, you’ll enjoy her worlds as much as she does.
