Sweet Peril by Wendy Higgins
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

GENRE: YA Paranormal Romance
THEME: Demons, Angels

BLURB:
Anna Whitt, the daughter of a guardian angel and a demon, promised herself she’d never do the work of her father—polluting souls. She’d been naive to make such a vow. She’d been naive about a lot of things.

Haunted by demon whisperers, Anna does whatever she can to survive, even if it means embracing her dark side and earning an unwanted reputation as her school’s party girl. Her life has never looked more bleak. And all the while there’s Kaidan Rowe, son of the Duke of Lust, plaguing her heart and mind.

When an unexpected lost message from the angels surfaces, Anna finds herself traveling the globe with Kopano, son of Wrath, in an attempt to gain support of fellow Nephilim and give them hope for the first time. It soon becomes clear that whatever freedoms Anna and the rest of the Neph are hoping to win will not be gained without a fight. Until then, Anna and Kaidan must put aside the issues between them, overcome the steamiest of temptations yet, and face the ultimate question: is loving someone worth risking their life?

REVIEW:
Sweet Peril had a different tone from Sweet Evil; Higgins takes her characters deeper into the word of demons and the dangers ahead if they don’t follow the rules, especially when it comes to who you fall for.

Sweet Peril follows Anna who is now taking on the task of her demon side to appease the whisperers that follow her. Being the daughter of the Duke of Substance Abuse has changed her a lot; grades barley passing in school and turning into a party girl is the “new” Anna. But when a message from an old ally comes, Anna must travel with her friend Kopano to find followers in her mission to free the Nephilims. Even with her heart wanting Kaidan she must put that aside to make sure they stay alive and keep her mission a secret from the other Dukes.

Anna was easier to connect with more than in Sweet Evil; I felt she grew up after the message she receives. She does however have to deal with a lot of heartache when it comes to Kaidan and also jealously. I really enjoyed Anna and Kopano working together to find other nephilims to support their cause. The readers will love getting more insight on Kopano and he definitely knows how to push Kaidans buttons when it comes to Anna. Anna also becomes a bit of a caretaker for one of her fellow nephs; who is not very trusting of men and comes to trust Anna. As the reader I like seeing that her character is working with her good and bad side to build herself into a stronger person. I liked seeing her outside of her comfort zone and helping others no matter the risks.

Kaidan is still the bad boy, but of course will make the readers frustrated and swoon at the same time. I love to love and hate this guy and strangely enough he’s more of a background character until the middle of the book. I feel that with their separation they both grew up a little more; both starting to understand how strong they are as individuals and even when their together. There is a bit of a change for him and the readers get to see how hard it is for him to try and stay away from Anna. He does a couple things that I felt were immature, but this guy still has a lot to learn and begins to understand his emotional side. We get that same hot chemistry with Kai and Anna, but also see them work together with their friends to find a way to free themselves from their fathers wraths.

As was in Sweet Evil there is always danger at every turn for these young nehph’s and this time around they get up close to see just how dangerous the Dukes really can be. The plot I felt was more intense and action packed, with Anna traveling around to recruit others with her father’s guidance and trying to steer clear of the whisperers. The ending will have you wishing that third book were out asap! To me this lived up to the hype of the series and I felt I enjoyed much more than the first book.

RECOMMENDATION:
This is a Young Adult with some mature content; it is mixed of Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance. Fans of Elizabeth Norris Unraveling and Amy Plum’s Revenants series will love Sweet Evil by Wendy Higgins.
