EXCERPT:
I wonder how long they held him there.  Whether they laughed at him.  Heckled his gouged right eye.  I wonder if he felt fear.  Misery.  Anguish.  I wonder if he felt alone.

I suppose I’ll never be sure who did it.  My guess is that the bloodied hands belong to his fed-up, mercenary men.  You could, however, guess that the deed was done by those above him.  In those mob organizations, it always seems like there’s another boss… another higher authority in charge of it all, who’s just been disappointed.  And in the Cannibal’s situation, I can’t imagine the loss of that duffel bag – plus the information inside it – went over all that well.

These are the things I ponder when I see the story.  It’s the day after Brooks made his escape and, once again, it’s splattered all over the news.  I’m sure they were going to dismember him entirely.  That’s what Brooks said they’d do.  But by some twist of fate, or perhaps it was strategically devised, the reports say the cops went to that downtown LA warehouse off a tip and managed to interrupt the mutilation.

There was a firefight.  Every cop was critically wounded, but none of the thugs went down.  None of them were even caught.  How is that possible, I’m sure some viewers are asking themselves.  Whenever I see something like that… I just wonder who got paid by whom and how many zeroes were exchanged.

Every internet portal and TV report tries to be creative.  Tries to find the bloodiest hook.  Despite the approach, they all pretty much share the same information.  He was bound to a chair.  His feet were nailed into a wooden board and every single finger looked like it was hacked off with a jagged or blunt instrument.  His neck, on the other hand, was a different story.

The men who did this, they wanted to kill him slow.  They’d sawed him open from the back of his neck, likely knowing, full well, that his jugular was right up in front, on the furthest end of the opposite side.

I wonder if they laughed at him while he died.
