Musing Monday #1 {Must Reads}

What is the one (or maybe two) qualities a book must have for you to pass it along to your best friend as a “must-read”?

Magic to the Bone (Allie Beckstrom, #1)For me, if it’s any genre: Paranormal Romance, Fantasy, SciFi, Romance, Urban Fantasy, YA, and Horror, it's all about the characters and lots of surprises and twist. Most of the stories I read either have two to four main characters that the novel focus' on and I really have to feel or connect with them. For example I really enjoy Devon Monks Allie Beckstrom Series.

Allie Beckstrom is a tough female lead, as is most Urban Fantasies but she has a certain vulnerability and strength that I feel makes her a relate able person. Plus the male lead and secondary characters are extremely important through out the series. Strong and memorable characters are key for me to recommend and pass it along as a " must read"

Also I'm a fan of extreme surprises and massive twist, I've read many books from each genre that are pretty predictable and I don't get that excitement that I want. Such as the shocker of memory loss of a lead character, the death of a prominent character, or villain is someone who everyone thought was a good person. I love shockers! I feel it gives the story that extra kick.

  1. I definitely need to add plot twists to my criteria. I love it when a book has you screaming, "WHAT!?" Near the end :)

  4. I love surprises and twists, but most importantly the characters need to feel real. Vulnerability does that, so that a character doesn't feel too superhuman.

  5. New follower here!

    Connecting with characters is most important to me. Without some kind of connection or genuine affection for a character, the whole book is lost to me. I also love a great twist!

  7. I loved the take on magic in Magic to the Bone. I'm like you in that I need to feel like I know the characters and to really connect with them. Devon Monk does this so well in MttB.
