I'm happy to host the next stop in the Illicit Magic Blog Tour apart of the Bookish Snob Tours. Author Camilla Chafer is visiting Seeing Night Reviews and telling us a little about her Lead character Stella. Plus I'm giving away a copy to one lucky reader!
Don't forget to check out my review: Seeing Night's Review of Illicit Magic by Camilla Chafer
Now Ill hand it over the Camilla Chafer, who will tell us about Stella her lead character.
Stella is one of those plucky heroines who doesn’t give up. She’s fought a lot of battles in her life and been through a lot of turmoil since the time her parents went missing when she was a little child. When we first meet her in Illicit Magic, she’s got a sucky job, a cramped little apartment and she’s feeling pretty low. Yet despite all that, she’s kind-hearted, she’s thoughtful and she perseveres, even when her life is turned upside down.
I wanted Stella to be a very realistic character, despite being in situations that are amazing, and despite having fantastical gifts. With magical powers that are on the verge of being realised, Stella becomes the target of a mysterious and terrifying group named the Brotherhood who are determined to rid the world of witches through modern day witch hunts. Her life is very abruptly changed when the enigmatic Etoile swoops in to rescue her, whisking her away from her dreary life. Instead of battling against her, and the other witches, who form a powerful magical council, Stella embraces the opportunity to uncover the truth about her parents’ disappearance while learning to understand her craft, as she is hidden from harm.
For the first time ever, Stella is among people who understand her. Not only that but they want to help her, like her, and at least for one, love her. While she finds something that resembles a home, and a much improved life as she comes to accept her heritage, Stella remains a thoughtful person, thinking through what she’s told and what she believes. As the book progresses, she’s gradually more aware of herself and more confident, especially as she is able to control the magic that has so far kept everyone at arm’s length. She becomes more aware of her own attractiveness and also more aware that as much as she is learning, things are being kept from her which stops her falling head over heels into her new life and forgetting herself.
Stella knows she’s not a kick-ass heroine, but she does know that she’s found a family with her new friends so when tragedy strikes, she’ll do anything she can to defend them. Of course, being a practical and thoughtful heroine doesn’t mean she always makes the right decisions. Simply, she’s not perfect but would we want her to be? I don’t think so.
Hi, I'm Camilla and I'm the author of Illicit Magic and Unruly Magic, the first two books in the Stella Mayweather Paranormal Series. The series starts with a lonely young woman, Stella, who has been caught up in a terrifying witch hunt and is whisked thousands of miles away to what she thinks is safety to learn her craft. The series is a blend of magic, mystery and romance with a splash of humour - and while the girls really do go all out to save themselves, there's always a hunky guy or two on hand to help them out.
I live in London, UK but I try to travel as often as I can - lately I've been to Paris, all over Denmark, Luxembourg, and several US states. In my day job I'm a journalist and editor so I write for magazines, newspapers and websites throughout the world (my favourite assignment was spending a week riding rollercoasters - if you listen carefully you can probably still hear me screaming).

Hi! Awesome giveaway and such an interesting question! :)
ReplyDeleteIf I will ever have a magical ability.. I'll choose Aura Perception. So I can virtually see and gain knowledge of almost everything about a person or an object a person has been in proximity with. Also, so I will know when a person is deceiving me. :) Ha! Beware :">

That's a hard question, my first instict is to say read minds, but you might find out things you just don't want to know. Then I thought, be invisible but again, might find out things you shouldn't. Now I've settled on being able to transport to different places, I love to travel and that seems harmless enough.
