Silver Knight
My Inspirations:
My inspirations for writing have always come from history and science. Little, tiny facts that are obscure and that not many people realize or even think about, I find interesting. I like to twist the history and put my own spin on it (twistories). One thing we don't think too much about is our calendar. But in reality our current calendar is a culmination of events and beliefs that has spanned thousands of years.

Silver Knight Excerpt:
"Well, that's what it's called now. But the Gregorian calendar has only been around since about 1582. It replaced the Julian calendar that was created about 45 B.C. by Julius Caesar, which was also a modification on yet another calendar. So you see no matter what the calendar date actually is, I know that I was born on the longest day of the year."

As a species we have always feared the dark, so we rejoice in the day when we have the most sun, and when we have the longest night, we have huge bon fires in an effort to drive back the darkness. Scientists have determined that it is a genetically coded survival trait in humans as most predators hunt at night. So humans hide from the darkness.

For many thousands of years festivals have been held around the time of the solstices. The solstices occur when the northern and southern hemispheres of the earth tilts either towards or away from the sun. When the northern part of earth tilts towards the sun, we have the longest day of the year. While on the opposite side, the southern hemisphere has the longest night. According to our calendar the day shifts in December and June, for instance for the summer solstice, sometimes it is June 20th and sometimes June 21st. It just depends on the rotation of the earth.

I have incorporated the solstice as an important element to The Silver Series. We have warriors who are born during the longest day of the year while demons emerge during the longest night. And, of course, demons love the night. The weapon to destroy demons is silver. And I wish I could say I came up with the symbol all on my own, but I didn't. For thousands of years the symbol for silver was the crescent moon. My interpretation: silver can defeat the darkness.
Thanks for having me today, and until next time,
Caron
