REVIEW:
Shame on me for waiting so long to read Sweet Evil by Wendy Higgins, It was a lot more than what I excepted and the demon world in this just gave me the creeps. It’s a story focused on good and evil, with one girl who has a bit of both and has a destiny for which she must choose her own path.
Sweet Evil follows Anna Whitt who is born with the sense to feel the emotions of others around her. She has always been the good girl, until one day she meets the ultimate bad boy Kaidan Rowe. She discovers that he is like her and that she is connected to a dark and dangerous world. A world where demons and angels exist.
Anna is a complex and emotional character, learning about her mother and fathers true nature it’s a bit of a shocker for her. She quickly learns that her adoptive mother has been protecting her from the dangers of the demon world. Then after meeting Kaidan Anna can’t stay away from him and she seeks him out to explain things to her. She is intrigued by the demon world and doesn’t understand that she’s different and must be protected. Though she did whine and cry a lot, she gets pulled into her father’s dark world without knowing all the answers and who wouldn’t be a little overwhelmed.
Kaidan is a nephilim and his father is the demon of lust, making Kaidan just like him. He is afraid of his father, who is quite powerful and demanding. There is also good in him, trying to protect Anna from his father and fighting is instincts. I loved how their relationship developed and the chemistry was off the charts. I felt bad for him most of the time because he can’t fight his true nature, which Anna has to deal with throughout the book.
Overall it I felt the best part was the demon world, learning about the head demons and their children. Both Anna and Kaidan are good and evil, they learn from each other about their families and a destiny they must follow. The tone of this story is pretty dark, there are some mature moments and adult themes, but teens these days may encounter these topics and situations. The ending was killer and the readers get to see what’s in store for Anna and her demon side.
RECOMMENDATION:
This is a Young Adult with some mature content; it is mixed of Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance. Fans of Elizabeth Norris Unraveling and Amy Plum’s Revenants series will love Sweet Evil by Wendy Higgins.
