{Guest Post: Trying to Tackle RT} with author Britt Bury of The Darkest Day

Today on Seeing Night Reviews I have paranormal romance author Britt Bury who is hear to tell us about her first time going to RT Convention and a little about her novel coming out in July!

Trying to Tackle RT
I want to thank Kristen so much for having me! This year, I went to my first RT and had such a good time. However, it didn’t start that way.
There are a few facts I need to reflect on before my next conference. For instance, I would remember that cosmopolitans are made with alcohol and not candy flavored kool-aid. I would also remember that I have an anxiety problem and anything outside my comfort zone (which is most everything that lies beyond the four walls I live in) makes me have a panic attack. Finally, I would remind myself that it is no longer 1987, no one wants to see me dance the robot while wearing sleeveless neon pink tank tops.

But at RT, the game changes.

Bumping into (Literally. I had a hell of a time balancing on high heels and kept running into people and stepping on toes) New York Times best-selling authors was more than enough to send my terrified ass bolting to the ladies room on more than one occasion to splash water on my face and hyperventilate. The clicking sound of those stupid stilettos (I couldn’t even afford in the first place) still rings in my ear, mocking and reminding me what a scared wuss I was being.

So what do you do? You’re far from home, out of your routine and surrounded by successful people who actually know how to walk in six inch pumps?

“Just breathe. Oh, and have a drink!”

It was the best advice I had gotten all weekend.

And I took that advice…several times.

I went from holding my head down and trembling with fear to chatty-happy-chick with confidence and rockin shoes. I woke up the next morning to my roommate showing me pictures of—you guessed it—all of the previously mentioned above.

There I was, frozen in photographic evidence, holding a Cosmo in a room full of strangers while dancing the robot in a neon pink tank top. I looked through the pictures twice, still unbelieving this was me. Me! I waited for the embarrassment to set in.

Oh, it did.

But then something else happened. A feeling of peace came over me. For one night, I branched out. Stepped away from all the gripping terror that has held me back most of my life and just breathed.

Now, I’m not saying getting a little tipsy is the way to solve your problems. For me, it was the experience as a whole that opened my eyes. I realized that I had to make a choice. You can either allow the unknown to scare you and run you off, or you can take a deep breath, and just let life happen. Had I not dug deep and found that ounce of courage that kept me at RT and not on the first flight home, I wouldn’t have met some of the most amazing women in the world.

Being a writer is hard. Putting everything from your inner imagination to your rawest emotions on paper and send it out there? Then to get a rejection back? It’s heartbreaking. A lot of us prefer our comfort zones and quiet space. We suffer in silence, and sometimes it’s hard to keep going. But you do. Because that’s what we writers do. Sometimes being alone makes the dream seem impossible. Every once in a while, we need support from one another to realize what we truly can accomplish.

The week at RT I realized I can handle more than I thought, and I can only do my best. And you know what? My best may not be good enough at times, but I’m okay with that. Because at the end of the day, I can say, “At least I tried.” There will always be a scene that’s hard to write or a plot that just doesn’t make sense. You may even be told you’ll never make it…

Don’t you ever believe that and don’t you dare stop trying. Because eventually, you’ll step outside the norm and prove to yourself and everyone else that you can handle anything and you will succeed!
