BLURB:
In a future world, Vampires reign. Humans are blood cattle. And one girl will search for the key to save humanity.

Allison Sekemoto survives in the Fringe, the outermost circle of a vampire city. By day, she and her crew scavenge for food. By night, any one of them could be eaten.

Some days, all that drives Allie is her hatred of them. The vampires who keep humans as blood cattle. Until the night Allie herself is attacked—and given the ultimate choice. Die… or become one of the monsters.

Faced with her own mortality, Allie becomes what she despises most. To survive, she must learn the rules of being immortal, including the most important: go long enough without human blood, and you will go mad.

Then Allie is forced to flee into the unknown, outside her city walls. There she joins a ragged band of humans who are seeking a legend—a possible cure to the disease that killed off most of humankind and created the rabids, the mindless creatures who threaten humans and vampires alike.

But it isn't easy to pass for human. Especially not around Zeke, who might see past the monster inside her. And Allie soon must decide what—and who—is worth dying for.

REVIEW:

When I first heard about this book I immediately knew the author, though I only read the first book in the Iron Fey series I really enjoyed it. I was excited to see what The Immortal Rules was all about and the cover rocked my socks. Anyways when I got this book I was impressed with the length being on the long side and I knew this had to be on heck of a book. I was definitely right and I really enjoyed what Kagawa did with the progression of the lead character. I’ve probably read about as many vampire books as a girl could handle but I loved how much this strayed from the norm.

The Immortal Rules follows Allison Sekemoto from the beginning of her human life through the transformation and aftermath of becoming a vampire. Now I understood the length of the book because Kagawa really goes into the emotional detail of Allie’s life, while she as a human trying to survive in a world ruled by vampires and then becoming what she hated. She then tries to survive in a group of humans who think she’s human, which I totally loved this idea. But the main part of this story is how Allie is trying to find her place and purpose; these humans might just be what she needs.

Allie is one tough girl and she’s had it rough, trying to survive without being attacked by rabid vampires and finding food that is almost impossible to get. In the beginning Allie has to live with loosing people she’s been with and trusted for a while. Then getting thrown in the world of being a vampire. Luckily she has a mentor and someone whom we get to know only bits and pieces about, Kanin.

Kanin is a huge chuck of the story, training and preparing Allie for what she now is. I don’t want to give away much more but I know he’s going to be a major character in the next book and I really loved this guy, he smart and obviously important.

Then there is Zeke, one of the humans and someone whom Allie finds a connection with. He’s an overall good guy who feels he needs to protect everyone. It took me a bit to like his character, but I loved how he really tried to know the real Allie. I felt a little bad for him since he had an annoying girl in the group longing for him and giving Allie a bit of a hard time too. There is more to the human group that makes for an intense bit of the storyline but I’ll leave that to you all to read.

Overall this is all about a girl trying to deal with her new and very difficult life. There is a lot of action, scary parts that get the heart pumping and a smidge of romance. So much happens that will make you remember this book and the ending was just preparing us for the next journey for Allie. I’m excited to see what Kagawa does next with these characters.

RECOMMENDATION:
This is a young adult book that you’ll keep you hooked till the end. Fans of Kandare Blake’s Anna Dressed in Blood and Amy Plums Revenants series will enjoy this new vampire series by Julie Kagawa.
