REVIEW:
Darkhouse by Karina Halle has to be the first book in many years to make me glad to be reading during the day. It was creepy, exciting, hilarious and down right one of the most entertaining books that made me want to hug my pillow.
The story starts of with a scary encounter and the lead Perry waking up to a not so nice dream. Perry reminded me a lot of myself; she’s the more tomboy of the family where her sister is the fashion perfect popular girl. Perry has had a pretty up and down life and nothing that has really been uplifting to her, until one day after a creepy encounter with a media producer in her uncles lighthouse, everything changed. Perry videotaped what she and the producer saw and heard in the lighthouse and ended up posting it on her sister’s fashion site. Little did she know if would become extremely popular and that the producer named Dex would want to make a show about it. But the real question is… what did they see in the lighthouse and why is it so interested in Perry and Dex?
As I said before I was really engulfed into Darkhouse and holding onto my pillow for dear life. Not only because Halle writing and details were extremely creepy but because I couldn’t wait to see what was going to happen next.
Perry was a great lead, not the perfect strong, and battle ready heroine I’m use to reading about. But a regular young woman who really is trying to figure out what is going on. She thrives on wanting something better than her life that she has and doesn’t give up on this new opportunity even if its scary dangerous. I really enjoyed her interaction with Dex aka Declan, together they were a hilarious duo who have some chemistry that I’m hoping to see more of in the future.
Dex, is a bundle of what the heck? Because he’s just all over the place with his mood and energy, I loved that he wasn’t perfect either. Like Perry he was trying to figure out what he wanted as well and get answers to all these questions that he’s had over the years.
Overall this was a fantastic horror and paranormal book with humor, a load of mystery and a hint at a possible romance. I didn’t want it to end and thankfully there is a second in the series called Red Fox that I cant wait to read.
RECOMMENDATION:
This is a mature young adult / adult story with very scary situation and fantastic mystery. I highly recommend this to fans of horror and paranormal enthusiast.

There’s always been something a bit off about Perry Palomino. Though she’s been dealing with a quarter-life crisis and post-college syndrome like any other twenty-something, she’s still not what you would call “ordinary.” For one thing, there’s her past which she likes to pretend never happened, and then there’s the fact that she sees ghosts. Luckily for her, that all comes in handy when she stumbles across Dex Foray, an eccentric producer for an upcoming webcast on ghost hunters. Even though the show’s budget is non-existent and Dex himself is a maddening enigma, Perry is instantly drawn into a world that both threatens her life and seduces her with a sense of importance. Her uncle’s haunted lighthouse provides the perfect catalyst and backdrop for a mystery that unravels the threads of Perry’s fragile sanity and causes her to fall for a man, who, like the most dangerous of ghosts, may not be all that he seems.

The whole "seeing ghost" thing is really taking off in the paranormal genre. I first really saw it in "Being Human" but I'm sure it got started long before that and I never noticed. Great review btw.
ReplyDeleteGreat review. Gonna have to add this to the list! :0)
