BLURB:
To survive, their bond must be unbreakable.

When the mysterious and passionate Rhane rescues Kali from an attacker in the theater parking lot, they form an immediate, smoldering connection. But Kali doesn’t remember Rhane or anything from their past. As far as Kali knows, she’s just a seventeen-year-old kid coping with an insatiable hunger for the “spark” or energy of others, feeding on classmates to survive.

A unique artifact—one that may hold the key to returning Kali’s memories—is uncovered by the archaeology firm where she works part-time, sending Kali and Rhane on a dangerous journey that leads them to the Forbidden City, into the unforgiving Gobi, and into the ruins of Rhane’s ancient homeland. As they fight for survival, Kali begins to discover who she really is and the true power she possesses.

But Rhane still harbors a secret that could destroy Kali…unless old enemies kill her first.

REVIEW:

I haven’t been able to get into a young adult book in a while, sad to say I have been in kind of a slump and steered away from the genre. But I was pleasantly surprised with Eden Ashley; this was a fantastic debut novel. It does have some pace issues, where I had to take a break from it because it was dragging in some areas. But the excitement of reading about Sirens, which I’ve never read anything on this topic before, was what kept me intrigue.

Dark Siren follows Kalista, who is a young high school girl who has no memories of her past life. But Kali knows she is different, she hungers for something more than food… she needs energy from others, even has been taking from her on and off again boyfriend Cal. But when Kali is attacked in a parking lot one night after she leaves the theater and is rescued by a mysterious boy named Rhane, her life begins to change. Rhane holds answers she needs and together they are pulled into a quest to find the truth.

Kali is an interesting character, I really liked how the author introduced the readers to her character. At the beginning we see a young Kali, who is rescued by her father while she is suffering. I had so many questions, what happened to her father, who is the prince and why is Kali the way she is? We are brought to the future to an older Kali who is a bit of a mess. When she meets Rhane, their bond is so strong that it’s almost an insta-love. It’s hard to explain their spark because it will give too much away. She has an interesting relationship with Cal her somewhat boyfriend, who is a bit of a mystery too.

Rhane was by far my favorite character, he had the most depth and I loved his back-story. He has been alive for so long, has so many memories and knows so much about Kali. I dud wish he would have told her things in the beginning, but I guess that would of ruined the plot a little. In the end he is defiantly the hero, he makes Kali feel safe even though he wont open up to her.

Overall this was a great start to young adult paranormal series. There was so much that happens within this world, such as: talking artifacts, shadow monsters, romance and suspenseful danger at ever turn. The characters still have some development to go through but this was a great introduction to a new world with so much mystery. Be prepared for a slight cliffhanger, its definitely going to get you thinking and wanting to read the next book!

AUTHOR BIO:
I’m Eden Ashley and I was born and raised in a small, sunny town in South Carolina. However, it’s the thunderstorms that inspire my best ideas. There are few things I love more than curling up with a good book and a cup of coffee on a rainy day, (except maybe chocolate cake. I love cake.) often reading into the wee hours of morning when something really grabs me. I pretty much love anything with supernatural elements, so writing paranormal romance and fantasy romance seems to be a natural fit.

My first novel, Dark Siren, is best described as paranormal romance artfully wrapped within a plot chock-full of action, adventure, and edge-of-your-seat suspense, while the series has evolved to become a journey of redemption and second chances as two characters understand that sometimes committing evil is necessary to protect what is loved most. I took the siren from Greek mythology (and borrowed a little from mermaid lore), creating an entirely different creature, with its own mythology, and one that Publisher’s Weekly praised for its passion and complexity. This is not just another werewolf/shapeshifter romance or vampire romance. I think this is a story that both adults and teens can enjoy, full of characters to fall in love with!

  2. Thanks, Kristen!!! Rhane is my favorite too! I'm glad Dark Siren did its job of peaking your interest in the next book. Expect more wild adventures and a whole lot more of Rhane (and the other Warekin). Banewolf explores so much more of their origins :)
