BLURB:

After twelve years away, organized consultant, Penelope Walker, doesn’t expect to return to Blue Lake, Virginia. But when her parents unexpectedly die, she returns to her hometown and finds out that general contractor and former love of her life, Ethan Callahan, is back too. Their relationship transcended the typical high school romance and his mere presence is enough to have all those feelings of passion return full force. Only she can’t forget that Ethan didn’t show up for their secret elopement and left her brokenhearted.

It doesn’t take long for Ethan to realize he wants Penelope back, but he knows she won’t let go of the past that easily. When she finds out what her parents asked him to do all those years ago, she’ll never let him back into her life. Even though he did all of it for her.

Penelope’s determined to unravel the mystery of their shared pasts, while Ethan wants nothing more than to move on to their future. If these two former lovers can learn to forgive and forget, will they be able to remember that they had the best kind of love?

REVIEW:

I knew before I started this book that it was going to be an emotional roller coaster and I I hoped that it was going to be HEA. I’m a huge sucker for second chances and this couple seriously needed saving emotionally.

The Best Kind of Love follows Penelope Walker who has come back to her hometown after her life takes a turn for the worse. But she’s struck will facing her past and broken heart, when the lover of her life is now her new neighbor. Ethan and Pen had planned to marry 12 years ago but Ethan broke her heart and the pain hasn’t gone away. Now Ethan and Pen are faced with dealing with what might still be love but Pen will have to forgive and understand the reason behind Ethan’s decisions.

Pen is a tough cookie, she’s a bit stern and serious, with everything that happened to her and the loss of her job she is a bit broken. Ethan coming back into the picture doesn’t really help. The tension and sparks that are in every scene they have together is fantastic. It was hard to see them struggling when I can see how good they are together. Neither moved on in their lives and Pen still doesn’t know what happened all those years ago. I was so rooting for these two to figure things out and the back and forth was seriously frustrating me too no end. But I knew these two had to come to a resolve or at least find some happiness.

Ethan was a hard guy to be mad at, I totally felt for Pen and how hard it would be to be have your heart so badly broken. But Ethan has a secret and has made some pretty tough decisions. In the end I adored him, loved his determination and protectiveness.

Overall this was such a great story and its only Carpenters second book, I can’t wait to see what she has in store for her next story. What I enjoyed most beside the wonderful character development was the family side of things; Pen has three sisters who were introduced, each having an interesting story to them. I’m hoping that we get to come back and see where their lives are heading. Another piece that hooked me was the pace, the story hit all the elements of heartbreak, angst, sadness, humor, secrets, and love to bring together two people who were truly destined to be together.

Kerri Carpenter Bio:

Kerri Carpenter began writing in her grandmother’s kitchen at the age of seven in a small town outside of Pittsburgh, PA. A life-long fan of reading, she got lost in the worlds of The Baby-sitters Club and Sweet Valley High. She also assumed that everyone had characters and plots forming in their heads at all times.

Once she turned to romance novels, she couldn’t get enough of books with happy endings, so she started writing her own. Now, Kerri writes contemporary romances, usually set in small towns. She enjoys reading, cooking, watching movies, taking Zumba classes, rooting for Pittsburgh sports teams, and anything sparkly. Kerri lives in Northern Virginia with her adorable (and mischievous) poodle mix, Harry.
