REVIEW:

Grimm Fairy Tales have always been a favorite of mine since I was a little kid. Thus I couldn’t resist the idea of a descendant having to survive living through a very scary and very real family curse of fairy tales. Hahn created a suspenseful and clever plot that circulated around one very unlucky teen.

UnEnchanted follows Mina Grime a clumsy young teen that seems to invite trouble with every step she takes. After saving the life of her long time crush in a freak accident she may have caused, her life takes an unusual turn. She discovers the truth behind her mother moving her family to different cities after her clumsy accidents get her noticed. She is a descendent of the original Grimm family and fairy tales are very real. She must now solve a long time family curse, to stay alive and keep her family safe.

Mina is an unusual girl, always falling over her own feet and she is told every day to be careful by her mother. After finding out her life is anything but normal, she takes on the task of solving the Grimm curse where fairy tales come alive and challenge her to finish their story. I loved this idea; Hahn creates a scary world, making Grimm tales modern and not so nice. But Mina’s awkwardness made me laugh and just wish she had some luck on her side. I felt her character grew up a lot as she took on each challenge. Even though she was a bit strange, I thought it was a fun characteristic to a female lead that’s usually tough and ready to fight.

Mina isn’t alone in her chaotic adventures, she has her best friend Nan who is a twitter fanatic, her crush Body and the mysterious Jared who seems to know more about her than she does. Together they are sucked into the dangerous tale of Hansel and Gretel along with the big Bad Wolf. What I enjoyed most was the modern take of the tales, how Mina’s family was cursed and the many twist and turns she has to take to keep herself alive. The only piece I didn’t care much for was the romance, I love romance but it was very force and Mina fell a bit easy for someone I felt was not likeable.

In the end I like the adventure, Mina is taken on a dangerous path, she also took in her families curse very well, I wished she would of freaked out a little more though. I’m hoping that Hahn continues Mina’s story and the readers get some more insight on the mysterious Jared. He’s by far my favorite, because he’s the only one who knows what is truly going on. The ending will definitely have the readers asking questions but also will give them a conclusion to the bigger story.

RECOMMENDATION:

This is a young adult novel that will have the readers pulling out their old fairy tale books to refresh their memories. Fans of Marissa Meyers Lunar Chronicles and Stacey Jays Of Beauty and Beast will enjoy UnEnchanted by Chanda Hahn.
