BLURB:
Bound to the water bound to land, a Siren’s soul will never be safe on either side of the ocean’s surface. Hidden beneath the rolling waves lies the secret to Theia’s past and as she unveils each haunting truth, she realizes the last seventeen years of her life have been a lie. Now, drawn into a mysterious new world and with nowhere to turn, Theia must place her trust in Luc, a beautiful boy who stops her heart with each dazzling smile, but even his unearthly charm can’t hide the truth—he has secrets— dark secrets binding him to his world—an underwater world where Theia will never belong—a world determined to destroy her soul.

REVIEW:
The beginning of Surface was intense; grab the edge of your seat introduction to a wonderfully written fantasy. It’s a rush of unknown for the lead character Theia, she is taking from her home in the middle of the night by strangers and dropped into the ocean without being able to question what was going on. I was immediately drawn into the mystery of why she was taken, why was she brought to the ocean and how is she going to survive. I love being brought into a story with questions, mystery and suspense, but it only got better from there.

Surface follows Theia, who has been kidnapped and left to struggle in the middle of the ocean wondering why she was left for dead. But she soon realizes she not alone, the ocean carries not only creepy mermaids that bite but beautiful under sea people who can breath under water. Theia learns her connection to this mysterious new world and the dangers of her being there. Theia’s only thoughts are how can she get home and why is it dangerous for her to be in the water.

Theia is a strong young girl who is pulled into an under water world after a frightening occurrence. The way she dealt with being left in the middle of the ocean was probably how many would react, erratic, calm, wonderment and giving up. Her ease into this new world was interesting; she is captivated by Luc who saves her from the crazy mermaids, along with the beautiful world she’s now in. She is special, born of a human and what Luc is an Artagasian. It is something forbidden and makes her a Siren. There is a lot of mystery behind what happened with her family and to why she was brought to the ocean.

Luc is Theia’s love interest and like her parents they form a forbidden connection. He learns from his mother about Theia and that his mother might not be someone he should fully trust. And much as I enjoyed Luc and Theia’s relationship, there are so many secondary characters that I couldn’t get enough of. The group who kidnapped Theia has a whole secondary plot that connects to her and the Artagasians. As well as Luc sister Celeste who like Luc finds a forbidden love, which she keeps a secret. I almost wish that the secondary stories were in the second book because it did slightly distract me from Luc and Theia’s plot.

Overall I liked being able to immerse myself in a different setting than the vampire, werewolves and fae worlds I’ve been stuck in. There is such a great concept behind the rules of the mythical beings on the land and in the water, it all started because of one incident long ago (which I wont spoil). There are so many secrets that I just didn’t know what was going to pop up next. The ending leaves the reader at a perfect point to continue with the next installment, I’m curious as to what Theia will do now after the choice that has been forced on her by the Artagasians. If you love myths, mermaids, suspense and of course romance, you want to add this to your wish list a.s.a.p.

RECOMMENDATION:
This is a young adult fantasy novel that is suited for anyone looking to dive into some underwater adventure and mystery. Fans of Revel by Maurissa Guibord and Of Poseidon by Anna Banks will love Surface by Tiffany Daune.

AUTHOR BIO
Tiffany Daune doesn't get why people want to grow up or why anyone would ever stop eating candy. Her purse is filled with books, lip gloss and a few pieces of Lego bricks. She writes best with a dish of chocolate chips on hand and finds licorice makes a better straw than plastic.

She lives on an island and believes mermaids may be raiding her candy stash, thoughshe hasn't caught them, yet.

Surface is her first novel and pairs well with gummy sharks.
