Interview & Giveaway for Amaretto Flame!

I had the pleasure of chatting with author Sammie Spencer about her book Amaretto Flame. The first book in the Eagleton Coven Series, I was thrilled to be asked to read and review her book. Magic, romance, action, and memorable characters are just a few words to describe this fantastic book.

Synopsis : Olivia has spent her life learning about her enemies, the deadly Venator - including how to kill them. What she knows nothing about is whiskey, playing poker, or rugged, copper-haired musicians. As punishment for a small 'crime,' Olivia is sent to a safe house in a human town and forced to live as one of them for a summer. There, she meets the charming Jackson Vance, and her real education begins. She soon discovers that she's being hunted, and figuring out why means she uncovers a secret that threatens to end everything she's ever fought for.

Seeing Night Reviews: Can you tell us a little bit about Amaretto Flame in your own words?

Sammie Spencer: Okay, so there’s this coven packed full of bad a-word witches. Olivia is probably the most bad a-word of them all, and she’s the future high-priestess. She messes up big time when sent on a mission and her punishment is to live as a normal human for a summer. It’s a bad time because there have been attacks that the coven thinks is the work of the Venator; evil witch-hunters. When Olivia meets and interacts with some humans in her new town, she’s pretty surprised to find out that there are a LOT of things she has zero experience with. Whiskey, carnivals, poker, and…wait for it…smokin’ hot musicians with an eye for the ladies. Throw in some betrayal, a lot of heat and attraction, and a BIG fat secret. Before you know it, Olivia finds herself face to face with her biggest enemies, with no idea of how to save everything and everyone she loves.

SNR: What got you interested in writing Paranormal Romance?

SS: I got the idea for Amaretto Flame before I ever started reading paranormal romance books. I’ve always been fascinated with the idea of magic and of the possibility of people having ‘hidden powers.’ I don’t necessarily know if I believe in oracles or people who have telepathy or anything like that but I definitely thought it would make a great story. Then, after reading a few books in the genre, I became hooked on them. Two and two just kind of came together.

SNR: Olivia and her Coven have very unique and amazing abilities, what made you decide on the powers each had?

SS: Most Wise-Ones don’t have such amazing abilities. They’re talented with magick, and have special abilities, but Eagleton Coven is unique as far as the rarity of their powers and the strength. The reason for that will be revealed further in the series. However, as for each character’s unique talents, those were the results of a lot of brainstorming and trying to determine how each piece of the puzzle would fit to make the overall story the way I wanted it.

SNR: The Venators, where did you get the idea for them as villains?

SS: Balance is something that the story really hinges on. If you pay attention, you’ll notice it present in many of the situations the characters are in. I knew I wanted these good Wise Ones, and to balance that, I needed an evil antagonist. Witch hunters was an idea that just came naturally, and the word Venator is Latin for ‘hunter,’ so…that’s how my evil hunters were born.

SNR: What did you enjoy most about writing this story?

SS: Getting lost in it. Sometimes, trying to envision things so clearly almost transports me into the story; a lot like getting lost in a book by one of your favorite authors. I listened to a lot of music and visualized a lot of the scenes and even now, I can hear some of those songs and still get a little lost in the story. <----- NERD. Haha!

SNR: What are some of your favorite Paranormal Romance Series?

SS: Vampire Academy is one of my favorites. Rose is so easy to connect with and when I got to the second or third book, I was in love with the characters. The Mortal Instruments is another of my favorites. I think Cassie Clare writes beautifully and who doesn’t love the cocky, tormented, sexy hero?

SNR: What surprises you most about being a writer? Something you didn’t expect?

SS: How hard it is! Haha. And I mean the actual writing, aside from the marketing and all that. I revised AF probably five or six times from top to bottom. It’s like taking pieces of your soul and having to make them fit into a jigsaw puzzle. For me, writing is very emotional and so it’s like painful and amazing all at the same time.

SNR: If you could be any one of your characters which one would you be and why?

SS: That’s a tough one! I guess I’d have to say Max. How cool would it be to just shift into chameleon mode and go wherever you wanted without anyone knowing? I also think (oddly enough) that it would be neat to be Jenny. She’s so funny and good-hearted and trusting. She’s one of my favorite characters of the whole book.

SNR: Are you working on any other projects that you can tell us about? A sequel?

SS: Yes – definitely! There will be four to five books in the Eagleton Coven series, and I’m about seventy-five percent done with the second. Hopefully everything goes smoothly and I can release it soon. The coven’s world is about to get rocked, rolled, and all shook up! ;-)

  1. Magical powers is a pretty broad category, but I'd love have the power of invisibility or ability to create force fields/manipulate gravity.
